25 Days in Edo, Benin City #2.

Back on my corper shun stories, this is another story to behold. My second write up was on the start of the camp, 25 Days in Edo, Benin City #1.

That’s not all, edo camp was like staying on an island full of soldier ants that would bite you off. These soldier ants could rep anything in that camp, if you are a corper, rep yours, for me, the soldier ant (for the purpose of today’s story) would be the kitchen. Gosh! If you see the meal they served us? We were like kings and queens suffering from an overdose of painkillers, by that I mean an overdose of Maami market visitation.
And here we go again.

Week 1: Kitchen Versus Maami Market.

There was a pink passport attached to collecting meals from the kitchen, in this meal ticket lies the number of days one is expected to be fed, most corp members had theirs empty, some half way and others full.

At the sound of the beagle, announcing breakfast, lunch or dinner, you would think they would serve you one delicious meal until you find your way to maami market.

Excuse me, what are they serving?’

‘What are they serving?’
And subsequently, bread and watered tea

Rice ( some hope but the rice na wash, the taste never changes )

The last four is their favourite serving dish.

The kitchen knew no other food than these and it was so annoying especially when you sat down to eat hot peppered indomie noodles and egg only to wake up and find out you had been dreaming. By the time you hear that they are serving one beans, you would change direction to the maami market.

Once or twice, we heard it was rice and chicken. The chicken was half the size of your thumb! The visit to the maami market wasn’t in vain, so many things to buy and eat, so many things to buy indeed. If you see the yam they served in the kitchen, ( one big thick yam with small stew and if you meet the nicer guys on rice or beans day, your plate may get full) it is nothing compared to the 250naira yam and egg I ate at the maami market.


That market made life so much easier, to me, there was nothing really so special about the market like that, the rice in stall number one, two and whatever tasted the same( probably because I got tired of visiting), the ajuwaya indomie people who turned kitchen bread to heaven sent manna were doing well in their cooking, the eba and vegetables, pounded yam and egusi, oh my! Was equally cool. Not to talk of the fries, then the beer stands for the guys who were lovers of wine and glass, derok drink was king amongst male corpers.

What are you looking for in the maami market that you won’t see? Make your hair or shave? Wash your clothes( for those that do not like to trade those small boys and girls or their mothers shouting ‘ wash your cloth, fetch water’ up and down the hostels, this is for you).
The maami market was always crowdy. The lovers of kitchen would always go to kitchen and the lovers of maami market food would usually go there, for some of us who shuffle between maami market and kitchen, it is in order to help the situation.

If the kitchen served bread for instance, we will collect and stroll to maami market to toast the bread with egg locally, forget the water tea, correct milo and milk will do, if you didn’t bring this, maami market will drain the money out from you, for it. That’s the best use of the maami market money market.

When they started to serve boiled egg with bread, the boiled egg would be reserved to eat with the bland rice the kitchen would serve later, and this rice ofcourse, will go in line with maami market fries, plaintain, pomo etc. You see if one doesn’t do these, one may die of starvation and poor feeding, you may actually think it’s good that you eating kitchen food until you taste food at maami, even the long queue at the kitchen will frustrate you to run to maami. As far as your money is at hand, or better still, wait for the transport and bicycle allowance or monthly alawee so you can eat all the way. Lol.

Edo camp maami market was dope! You would enjoy it to the fullest, but hold ya cash.

The kitchen was dope! I mean upside down dope– (oops, I wouldn’t want to condemn it for corpers who eat kitchen food well).
